The Government of Canada has expanded its online passport renewal service to all eligible adult Canadians, making passport renewals faster, more convenient, and fully digital.
Eligible adults can now renew their passports online by submitting their application, photo, and payment electronically, eliminating the need to visit a Service Canada Centre or mail physical documents. The government also guarantees that eligible online passport renewal applications will be processed within 30 business days, or the passport will be issued free of charge.
The nationwide rollout follows successful pilot programs that tested the digital renewal system with smaller groups.
While online passport renewal is now available to all eligible adults, in-person and mail-in services will remain available for those who prefer traditional methods or do not meet the online eligibility requirements.
“Canadians expect passport services that work for their lives. Expanding online renewal gives eligible Canadians a simpler, more convenient way to renew their passports, without unnecessary barriers or delays. This is part of the Government of Canada’s ongoing work to modernize passport services and deliver public services that are responsive to the needs of Canadians today.”
The Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship
Eligible applicants can now renew their passports online by just following simple steps, making the process effective and efficient.
Another quick facts
The Canadian government faced a number of difficulties in 2022–2023 which led to passport processing delays. The excessive volume of applications that Service Canada centers had to handle caused processing periods to reach four or five months.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) hired temporary workers, opened processing centers on weekends, and apologized to the public after several travelers missed scheduled travels as a result of delayed passport renewals.
One of the most important steps in overcoming these challenges is the expansion of online passport renewal. Applications can be handled more quickly by digitizing the renewal process, which also minimizes paperwork, human data entry, and mistake risk.
The system also automatically fills in information from a candidate's existing passport record, making the process more efficient.
To support the increased demand, IRCC has upgraded its digital infrastructure following technical issues during the 2023 pilot program. The government's 30-business-day processing guarantee reflects its commitment to delivering reliable passport services while maintaining sufficient capacity during peak travel periods.
This is only for the Canadian passport holders renewing their Canadian passports. If you're a temporary resident in Canada on visitor visa, tourist visa and on Canada study visa then this service is not for you. You travel on your home country's passport and renew it through your own government's procedure only.
