Canada Introduces Fast-Track Work Permits for Global AI Professionals

Canada wants the world’s best AI minds, and it is no longer willing to lose them to slower paperwork. In a move directly targeting the growing global race for artificial intelligence talent. So, Canada took a significant step toward becoming a global AI hub on June 4, 2026.

When the federal government announced plans to fast-track work permits for artificial intelligence professionals, processing them in 20 days or less.

The move is part of the Carney government's newly launched national AI strategy, AI for All.

What the Fast-Track AI Work Permit Stream Would Look Like

The new AI worker stream would be introduced under Canada's existing Global Talent Stream (GTS), part of its Temporary Foreign Worker Program.

The current process in the GTS requires Labour Market Impact Assessment applications to be processed within 10 days, which employers need to do to employ temporary foreign workers under the TFWP. After this, Canada work permit applications take another ten days to process.

This contrasts sharply with the typical timeframe of the TFWP, which ranges from two to six months.

The additional feature of the program, according to the government, is that the new AI worker stream would include provisions to help employees become permanent residents of Canada.

A few things remain unclear regarding the new initiative from the Canadian Government. These include the exact nature of how the stream will function, whether it would be a new category within the GTS or a change to existing categories, among other questions, such as eligibility criteria and launch dates.

AI for All Strategy Behind the Announcement

The work permit stream was not announced in isolation. It forms part of Canada's new AI for All strategy, which aims to generate an additional $200 billion in economic growth and create 250,000 AI-related jobs over the next five years.

The strategy also seeks to increase AI adoption across the economy from just over 12 percent today to 60 percent by 2034.

It is built around six key pillars: protecting Canadians from AI-related risks, increasing public participation in AI, driving economic growth, building sovereign AI infrastructure, supporting Canadian AI companies, and strengthening international partnerships.

The plan was shaped by more than 11,000 submissions collected through a nationwide consultation. Contributors included workers, entrepreneurs, researchers, students, First Nations, Métis and Inuit leaders, labour groups, and representatives from the arts and culture sectors.

The government views global talent recruitment as a critical part of achieving these goals. More than 150,000 innovators are already working on AI solutions across over 3,500 Canadian companies.

However, industry leaders have repeatedly warned that domestic talent alone cannot meet rising demand. A dedicated fast-track work permit pathway is intended to help close that gap and strengthen Canada's position in the global AI race.

What This Means for AI Professionals Considering Canada

For skilled AI workers outside Canada, this announcement represents a meaningful shift in accessibility, provided the final program design matches its stated ambition.

Currently, most foreign AI professionals applying to work in Canada face timelines measured in months, not weeks. A dedicated 20-day stream, if implemented well, would put Canada on par with some of the faster talent pathways offered by the UK's Global Talent visa and select US O-1 routes.

The permanent residence pathway attached to the stream adds further weight. It suggests the government is not simply filling a short-term skills gap through a Canada Work Permit but is actively building a long-term AI workforce, one expected to anchor part of the country's $200 billion economic growth target.

Applicants and employers should watch for official program details from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) in the coming months. Given the absence of a launch date, the stream is not yet open for applications.
