The IELTS exam is going fully digital. IDP has officially confirmed that the paper-based IELTS test will be discontinued globally from mid-2026, with all test delivery moving to a computer-based format.
The announcement is a major shake-up for the thousands of students, workers, and skilled professionals who take the IELTS exam each year to apply for a Canada student visa, a Canadian PR visa, or to immigrate to Canada through various immigration pathways.
Canada currently holds approximately 690,000 international students as of late 2025, and with the government set to issue up to 408,000 study permits in 2026, the stakes around this format change could not be higher.
Starting mid-2026, the paper-based IELTS will no longer be available at test centres in Canada or globally. The Listening and Reading sections will move entirely to a computer-based format.
The Writing section will also be primarily computer-based, though IELTS authorities have confirmed a limited "Writing on Paper" option will be introduced in selected locations, allowing candidates to handwrite Writing responses while completing the rest of the test on screen. However, not all markets are confirmed for this option, and Canada-specific availability is yet to be officially announced by IDP.
The Speaking test remains unchanged; it will continue to be conducted face-to-face at the test centre. Crucially, IELTS authorities have confirmed that the test format, scoring system, question types, and global recognition will remain unchanged. Scores from the computer-based IELTS are confirmed to be fully comparable to paper-based results, meaning no candidate is disadvantaged by the format shift.
For candidates using IELTS to apply for a Canada student visa or to immigrate to Canada, this is reassuring news: your score will carry the same weight with Canadian universities, IRCC, and immigration authorities as it always has.
If you are planning to apply for Canada PR, secure a Canada student visa, or immigrate to Canada through Express Entry or any Provincial Nominee Program in 2026, this change is directly relevant to your IELTS preparation timeline.
The most immediate advantage is speed. The computer-based IELTS delivers results within 1 to 5 days, compared to the 13-day turnaround for the paper-based format. For candidates with tight Canadian admission or visa deadlines, this is a significant upgrade.
Candidates who have already taken the paper-based IELTS exam need not worry; existing scores remain valid for the standard two-year period and are fully accepted for all Canadian immigration and study pathways.
Those who prefer handwriting should begin practising typing now. Writing speed and keyboard accuracy can impact performance on the Writing section, so transitioning your preparation early is strongly advised.
While the exact date of the discontinuation of paper-based testing in Canada has not yet been specified by IDP, the mid-2026 timeline is confirmed. Candidates are advised to monitor the official IDP IELTS website for country-specific cutover dates and updates on the availability of "Writing on Paper" in Canada.
Additionally, the IELTS exam fee in India has increased to INR 19,000 from April 1, 2026, up from INR 18,000 previously. A heads-up for Indian students preparing to immigrate to Canada or secure a Canadian student visa through the 2026 intake.
The IELTS exam is evolving, and so must your preparation. Start practising on IDP's free computer-based mock tests today to stay ahead of the transition.
