NWT Minimum Wage Set to Increase to $17.20 per Hour on Sept 1, 2026

The Government of the Northwest Territories has announced that the territory's minimum wage will increase by 25 cent,representing (1.5 percent increase). The new rate will take effect from September 1, 2026.

Under the revised rate, the Northwest Territories minimum wage will rise from $16.95 to $17.20 per hour. The annual adjustment reflects changes in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and the average hourly wage for 2025. In accordance with the territory's minimum wage calculation formula.

This is the fourth year in a row that the Northwest Territories has modified its minimum wage using this mechanism. Which was implemented in 2022 to create an open and uniform approach to  annual wage reviews.

The territorial government claims that the existing formula is intended to raise the minimum wage in a way that is consistent, predictable, and moderate. This strategy ensures that workers are better equipped to keep up with the growing cost of living in the Northwest Territories. While also giving businesses more security and assurance.
