In 2024, Ontario has already used up all 21,500 of its allotted federal nominations under the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP).
To meet the labour market demand in Ontario PNP, the program strategically targeted a limited number of priority areas, including technology and health care, to overcome shortages in important areas throughout the province and relied on competent experts.
Along with the federal immigration programs, Ontario uses its primary economic immigration program, OINP, to nominate foreign nationals who have the education, training, and experience that is needed to fill the continuing employment gaps in Ontario.
Most nominations were conducted in 2024 under the Express Entry Human Capital Priorities (6,330), Skilled Trades (4,101), Master Graduate (3,810), and International Student (3,283) streams. The focus of these streams is in Ontario on attracting skilled workers, graduates, and entrepreneurs.
OINP Stream | Number of nominations |
Employer Job Offer: Foreign Worker | 2,731 |
Employer Job Offer: In-Demand Skills stream | 408 |
Employer Job Offer: International Student stream | 3,283 |
PhD Graduate stream | 446 |
Ontario’s Express Entry Skilled Trades stream | 3,810 |
Ontario’s Express Entry Human Capital Priorities stream | 4,101 |
Ontario’s Express Entry French-Speaking Skilled Worker stream | 6,330 |
Entrepreneur stream | 300 |
Grand total | 21,500 |
The distribution demonstrates the balanced method of the program in supporting economic development through selecting candidates of different types and skill levels.
Due to continued pressure on healthcare systems, in 2024, the OINP nominated more than 3,200 healthcare workers, a historic record, accounting for approximately 15% of all nominations. Occupations included:
This nomination will enhance the healthcare personnel in Ontario, especially in the underserved regions.
With more than 6,300, or about 30 percent, of all candidates being in tech-related jobs, the successful Ontario tech sector is another good target. The most important ones were:
That focus reflects the Ontario approach to innovation and the digital economy.
The successful meeting of the Ontario nomination quota reflects the result of calculated as well as coordinated immigration. According to a spokesperson of OINP, immigration is a joint responsibility of the federal government and the provinces.
The 2024 Ontario outcomes demonstrate how we are resolving labour shortages and helping the economy and communities grow.
Another year is about to be completed, and planning to have more successful years to come, possibly in 2025. The province will also use immigration as a means of workforce development and long-term prosperity.
Applicants and employers should visit the official OINP site to get notifications on any upcoming Ontario PNP draws and changes in the program.
Key Highlights:
Ontario is still a leader in economic immigration, engaging targeted selection to enable it to promote growth, innovation, and prosperity within communities across the province.
