Great news! Canada Announces PGP Invitations to Encourage Family Reunions

In an important development for Canadian citizens and permanent residents seeking to reunite with their loved ones, the Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship Program (PGP) was officially opened on 28 July 2025. Who Are the Eligible PGPs for Invitation in 2025?

The lottery for this year, that is, 2025, is open only for those who had submitted an interest-to-sponsor form in 2020 and for those who:

  • Expressed interest in sponsoring in 2020, and
  • Did not receive an invitation in earlier rounds between 2020 and 2024.

IRCC will continue to send out 17860 invitations in the next two weeks, hoping to approve 10,000 complete PR applications under the PGP.

Application Process: Complete Guide

Upon receipt of an invitation, two applications are to be submitted online:

  • Sponsorship Application: wherein the sponsor applies.
  • Permanent Residence Application: wherein your parent(s) or grandparent(s) apply to immigrate to Canada.

The above applications have to then be filled out and submitted using Canada's PR Portal. If there is a paid representative helping them, the representative must use the Representative Portal.

If their parents or grandparents are applying, each will have to submit a separate PR application with their portal account.

Special arrangements are available for those who are unable to apply online due to some accessibility reasons.

Required Documents and Forms

Both the sponsor and the main applicant (parent or grandparent) must fill out a variety of digital and PDF forms. Some of the key forms include:

For the Sponsor:

  • IMM 1344: Application to Sponsor
  • IMM 5768: Financial Evaluation
  • IMM 5771: Document Checklist

For the Principal Applicant:

  • IMM 0008: Generic Application Form for Canada
  • IMM 5669: Schedule A Background Declaration
  • IMM 5406: Additional Family Information

All forms must be submitted electronically/online mode through the PR portal, and the principal applicant must digitally sign the application.

Additional fees apply for spouses, dependents, biometrics, police certificates, and medical exams.

After You Apply: What to Expect?

After the complete application has been submitted:

  • IRCC may request biometrics, police certificates, and medical exams.
  • You must respond to any additional document request within 30 days.
  • You can track your application status and submit updates via the IRCC web form.

Always submit your application by the deadline specified in your invitation letter. Any of your applications that are either incomplete or submitted late will be returned and will not be accepted for processing.
