Sault Ste. Marie has officially released its list of designated employers for the Rural Community Immigration Pilot (RCIP), marking a significant step forward in its efforts to attract skilled foreign workers and support community growth in Northern Ontario.
The RCIP is an employer-driven pathway to Canadian permanent residency, designed to address labour shortages in rural and northern communities. To be eligible, foreign nationals must secure a job offer from a designated employer in one of the community’s priority sectors and meet additional federal and community-specific requirements.
The Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation, the body overseeing RCIP applications in the region, has approved the following organizations as designated employers:
This list is expected to evolve as more employers in the region apply for designation.
To apply under the RCIP in Sault Ste. Marie, foreign workers must have:
1. A job offer from a designated employer in a priority sector, which includes:
2. A job offer in a priority occupation (as defined by the community).
3. Sufficient work experience, language proficiency, education, and settlement funds.
4. A community recommendation, which supports the applicant’s intent to reside in the community.
Once these requirements are met, candidates can apply to the federal government for permanent residence.
Sault Ste. Marie has been allocated 300 spots for RCIP permanent residency applications in 2025. The initiative is part of a broader federal strategy to attract immigrants to smaller Canadian communities to help meet labour market demands and support regional economic development.
Other participating communities, such as Timmins and Thunder Bay, have also published their designated employer lists as the 2025 intake period progresses.
