Spouses of OWP holders are now eligible to work in Canada!

Canada’s Immigration Minister Sean Fraser announced on December 2, 2022, that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will now seek to expand the eligibility of Open Work Permits (OWP) to spouses of OWP holders in Canada.

New changes to the Open Work Permits eligibility

With this change, IRCC is expecting more than 100,000 new OWP applications from spouses of existing OWP holders in Canada.

Expected to begin at the start of Canada Immigration 2023, this new change will be implemented in three phases:

  • PHASE 1: High-wage stream - For spouses of higher-paid workers with an Open Work Permit.
  • PHASE 2: Provinces and Territories stream – For spouses of lower-wage workers with an Open Work Permit.
  • PHASE 3: Families of agriculture workers – For families of seasonal agricultural workers.
