Canada Extends Financial Support for Students from 2026 to 2027

The Government of Canada has announced an extension of key financial support measures for post-secondary students for the 2026 to 2027 academic year. This move aims to ease the financial burden on students and improve access to higher education amid rising living and tuition costs.

These temporary measures, first introduced to support the Canada student visa amid economic uncertainty, have now been extended to ensure continued affordability.

The decision is expected to benefit hundreds of thousands of students across Canada, including both domestic and international learners planning their education journey.

Extended Financial Support Measures for Students

The government will continue to implement the 40% increase in non-repayable Canada Student Grants, which significantly reduces the amount students need to repay. This initiative is expected to support over 571000 students.

However, now Canada is increasing the weekly student loan limit from $210 to $300. It allows the students to access more funds to cover tuition, accommodation, and daily expenses. Around 422000 students are expected to benefit from this enhanced loan capacity.

Another important factor is that student loans will remain interest-free during the candidate's study period. It helps the student to focus on education without worrying about the accumulating debt.

Along with this, the government is investing approximately $1.2 billion in these extended measures, that reinforcing its commitment to making post-secondary education more accessible and inclusive.

What does Financial Support mean for Students in 2026?

Canada continues to provide financial support and greater flexibility and stability for students planning to study in the country. With higher grants and increased loan limits, students can manage rising costs such as tuition, housing, and daily living expenses.

However, for international students, this announcement reflects Canada’s stronger commitment to education and students' welfare. While most of the financial support and the benefits apply to domestic students, the broader investment improves infrastructure, resources, and the overall academic opportunities across institutions.

This also strengthens Canada’s position as a top study destination, offering not only quality education but also a supportive financial environment.

How Can Applicants Apply for a Student Visa?

International students who want to benefit from studying in Canada must apply through the official study permit process managed by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

The process begins with securing admission from a Designated Learning Institution. Once accepted, students must prepare key documents, including proof of funds, academic records, and language test results, such as the IELTS exam.

Applicants then submit their study permit application online. They must also demonstrate financial capacity to cover tuition and living expenses, even though broader government investments help improve overall affordability.

After approval, students can immigrate to Canada and begin their academic journey, with access to world-class education and an improved support system backed by government funding.
