Canada Express Entry system has shown a major shift in early 2026, with Canadian Experience Class (CEC) cut-off scores dropping significantly after months near the 533–534 level. This change has enabled many candidates who previously scored too low to receive Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for Canadian permanent residence.
However, the lowered thresholds mean profiles with lower language scores, no foreign work experience, limited Canadian work experience, or shorter education credentials can now become competitive.
According to the CIC News analysis, CEC cut-off scores have dropped significantly since late 2025, opening opportunities for more applicants:
| Date of Draw | Cut-Off Score | ITAs Issued |
| January 21, 2026 | 509 | 6,000 |
| January 7, 2026 | 511 | 8,000 |
| December 16, 2025 | 515 | 5,000 |
| December 10, 2025 | 520 | 6,000 |
| November 26, 2025 | 531 | 1,000 |
This trend shows a considerable drop from traditional mid-500s thresholds, reflecting reduced competition as many high-scoring candidates exited the pool earlier in 2026.
One fictional candidate, Petter, is a 27-year-old web developer from Czechia. He holds a bachelor’s degree from his home country and a master’s degree from Canada, as well as four years of Canadian work experience.
Michael’s English language score is only CLB 7, and he does not know French. Despite this, his total CRS score of 515 would have made him competitive in recent CEC draws, even with his lower language ability.
Key Points in Profile:
This shows that strong education and work experience can outweigh moderate language scores under current cut-off conditions.
Lauran, a 29-year-old from Scotland, demonstrates that having no foreign work experience doesn’t preclude eligibility under lower cut-offs. She earned a one-year college certificate abroad and a four-year bachelor’s degree in Alberta. She then worked in Alberta for four years and holds decent language scores (CLB 8 English, NCLC 5 French), resulting in a CRS score of 511, which would have been sufficient to receive ITAs in the latest draws.
Ritesh, a 32-year-old academic from India, has multiple degrees, including a PhD, but only one year of Canadian work experience. His language skills are strong (CLB 11 English, NCLC 6 French), resulting in a CRS score of 524, which would have qualified him for several recent CEC draws, even though many applicants typically have more Canadian work experience.
Supriya, a 30-year-old from the Philippines, completed a one-year certificate program in Canada and has three years of Canadian work experience. When accompanied by her husband, her total CRS score is 510, just above recent cut-off levels despite limited post-secondary education. This shows that even short-term education credentials can lead to success under the current scoring trend.
The recent reduction in Canadian Experience Class cut-off scores means that a broader group of applicants, including those with moderate language skills, limited foreign or Canadian work experience, or shorter education credentials, can now compete fairly for Canadian permanent residence. However, cut-off scores may rise again depending on future draw sizes and pool composition throughout 2026.
Aspiring candidates are encouraged to:
Canada’s Express Entry changes in 2026 are creating more opportunities for candidates who may have previously missed out due to higher CRS cut-off thresholds. By lowering the bar to 509 points, IRCC is enabling a wider range of profiles to receive Invitations to Apply, signalling a more inclusive phase of skilled immigration through the CEC stream.
