The city has officially outlined priority sectors and occupations eligible under two federal immigration programs the Rural Community Immigration Pilot and the Francophone Community Immigration Pilot.

The RCIP is a new permanent residence pathway for foreign nationals who can help fill labour shortages in designated rural communities in Canada (outside Quebec). There are 14 communities that have been chosen to participate in the RCIP in 2025.

Only employers within these sectors can be designated under the pilot programs. This means foreign workers must receive a job offer from a Sudbury-designated employer operating in one of these key industries.
In addition to getting a job offer from a provided employer, which is also within a priority occupation, foreign nationals must fulfil additional requirements related to work experience, language proficiency, education, and settlement funds so as to be eligible.
