Canada has placed 19th in global rankings. The U.S. News report assessed 100 countries. Rankings were released on May 14, 2026. Canada's strongest showing came in Culture and Tourism. The country placed 8th in that category.
Governance and Infrastructure categories also bolstered Canada's ranking. Switzerland claimed the top spot this year. Denmark and Sweden followed in second and third. The United States placed 18th, ahead of Canada.
The report used a redesigned data-driven methodology. It evaluated national well-being across 100 indicators.
The rankings provide insights into Canada's global standing and help you to immigrate to Canada. They measure economic development, quality of life, and sustainability. This assessment helps understand Canada's international competitiveness today.
This year's rankings mark the first use of a redesigned methodology. U.S. News moved away from perception-based surveys. The new approach uses 100 statistical indicators. Data came from more than 30 organizations. These include the United Nations and the OECD. The World Bank also contributed data sources.
Europe dominated the rankings this year. Eighteen of the top 25 were European. Australia secured 14th position in the rankings. Singapore ranked 16th among all assessed countries. Japan placed 17th in the global assessment. South Korea came in 20th. These were the only Asian countries in the top 20.
The shift to data indicators changed everything. Public perception surveys are no longer used. Year-over-year comparisons became less straightforward. The methodology fundamentally changed how rankings work.
Switzerland claimed the top spot this year. Denmark and Sweden followed in second and third. The United States placed 18th, ahead of Canada.
The table below shows the complete rankings:

All top 10 positions went to Europe. The continent dominates in quality of life. Governance scores were also exceptionally high there. Economic stability indicators favoured European nations strongly.
The rankings group indicators into eight categories. Canada's performance varied across these scoring areas.
Canada's strongest result was 8th in Culture. This category measures a country's global influence. Creative exports and Nobel Prizes are included. Heritage and Canada visitor visa appeals are also measured.
U.S. News noted Canada's multicultural ethic from 1971. This still shapes immigration policy today.
Canada's lowest score was 63rd in the Natural Environment category. This ranked efforts to protect natural amenities. Air quality and species richness were measured.
| Ranking Criteria | Rank |
| Culture and Tourism | 8 |
| Governance | 18 |
| Opportunity | 18 |
| Infrastructure | 20 |
| Economic Development | 21 |
| Health | 27 |
| Civic Health | 27 |
| Natural Environment | 63 |
Canada placed 4th in the 2024 rankings. It ranked 2nd in the 2023 rankings. This year's drop is from the new methodology. It's not a sharp change in performance.
Earlier, U.S. News surveyed 17,000 people. They ranked 87 nations on perception attributes. Quality of Life was one theme. Cultural Influence was another key measure. Canada consistently scored well under that system.
The 2026 rankings use 100 hard indicators. Scores combine using a geometric mean. Countries must perform well across all categories. Relying on one strong category won't work.
The change in methodology explains the shift in ranking. Direct comparisons with earlier years are inaccurate. The assessment framework fundamentally changed in 2026.
