Which Express Entry Categories are Active in 2026?

In 2026, Canada's Express Entry system continues to focus on category-based selection for candidates seeking to apply for Canada PR. This system targets candidates who can meet the needs of the labour market and support the province's economic growth.

In 2026, the active categories are:

  • French-language proficiency
  • Healthcare and social services occupations
  • Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) occupations
  • Trade occupations
  • Education occupations
  • Transport occupations
  • Physicians with Canadian work experience
  • Senior managers with Canadian work experience
  • Researchers with Canadian work experience
  • Skilled military recruits

However, recent updates also show Canada shifting its focus toward highly targeted immigration selection rather than general draws. This approach allows IRCC to invite candidates with specific federal skilled worker program and experience that match the country’s workforce demands.

As a result, applicants working in priority sectors now have a better chance of receiving permanent residency invitations, even with comparatively lower CRS scores.
